Her Entrepreneur Journey

Jennae had been writing for most of her life, mostly fiction, but in high school she started writing a lot more poetry. As she got into college, she posted a lot of her poems on Tumblr, and they got re-shared often. It was right around that time that Instagram was starting to take off, so after seeing a few other poets sharing their work on that platform, she made her own Instagram account solely dedicated to her writing and what itā€™s like to be an author. It wasnā€™t long before she decided to publish a book with her poetry from over the years.

She ultimately decided to self-publish, and it was after deciding to write a chat book (a short book of only about 70 pages) a few months later that she really started seeing sales of that book, and then additionally of her first book. That chat book, Uncaged Wallflower, went on to become her best seller. She realized she could actually make money off this hobby and has since published a total of 6 books.

What has your self-love journey been like with anxiety and whatā€™s your advice to women dealing with it too?

My book, I Am More Than My Nightmares, is prominently about my battle with anxiety, and I wrote that book out of my readersā€™ requests, because I was talking a lot about my social anxiety on my social media.

For a long time, I was letting anxiety control my life in a way that didnā€™t make me feel like my true self.

I knew I couldnā€™t go on living like that. There are so many methods of dealing with it, and so many types of anxieties, but meditating really worked for me. Most of my anxiety comes from overthinking, so if I can really clear my head and not allow my mind to wander to worst-case scenarios then it helps a lot. Itā€™s also especially easy with social media to start comparing your life to someone elseā€™s and try to find those picture-perfect moments for Instagram, but Iā€™ve found that being authentic and trying to tell a real story has gotten more attention than anything else because thatā€™s what people relate to.

Do you have an practices to help keep your mental health strong?

Definitely meditation, like I mentioned before. I also do gratitude journaling, which starts my day on a positive note and makes me feel happier. I use to be much less positive and feel overwhelmed, but now I start my day with positivity and gratitude and it helps a lot. There have been a few people that didnā€™t like my book because itā€™s too ā€œhappyā€ or ā€œoptimisticā€ but I think those people are probably the people that need it most because they may be battling with something negative.

How do you continue to show up for your audience on the days that arenā€™t as easy?

My audience is so great because they know when I show up, itā€™s authentic and isnā€™t always perfect. You just have to decide that the imperfection and the hard or negative days are worth sharing too. Everyone has struggles and issues that theyā€™re battling. the more you can build an audience that can actually relate to you, the more likely they are to want to show up for you, buy from you, etc.
