Her Entrepreneur Journey
Mallika has been in business for over 12 years, and started her photography business as a child portrait photographer when her own kids were little. She did that for many years before she started getting involved in some women’s networking groups. That opened her mind up to ideas about these businesses and what they were doing, and led her to start doing headshots here and there. She started realizing that these women needed more help than just that one-dimensional profile picture.
As a visual storyteller, Mallika started realizing how important it could be for their brands to go deeper into their stories and create photos that really told those stories. She pivoted in her business and became a brand photographer for women, and has been running MikiFoto and Co. ever since, helping women tell their stories through brand photos and create a brand strategy that empowers them to become the face of their brand, and create a brand that makes money, is memorable, and is magnetic.
Why do we need to be the face of our brand?
You absolutely need to be the face of your brand, regardless of what type of business you run. You are going to hurt your brand by being faceless. People are looking to connect with you and with the heart behind the business, and that’s what is going to develop that relationship so that they become a customer and an ambassador for your brand and tell others about you. In today’s world if you’re not showing up as the person for the brand, they’re going to go somewhere else, because there are so many options out there. If you’re not showing your face, they’ll go to someone who is.
You have to do the work to develop your own story first and get clear on your values and mission and then make that translate in your images.
It’s so important for you to show up, share your story, and explain how you are different than everybody else, and tell these stories visually and through your message so that you can rise above the noise and stand out. If you don’t you’re at the risk of looking like everyone else or making your audience feel like they can’t trust you, because telling your story and letting them get to know you is how you build trust.
What are those 6 key images that we need?
1. Your Power Pose. This is another name for your headshot, and it’s the bare minimum. It’s your introduction or virtual handshake to your audience. It should be professional and have a little bit of personality. You should be looking your best (no selfies) and give you audience the best first impression of you.
2. The Working Girl. This is the insider look into your business. What is your process like and what tools do you use? What does your workspace look like? Peel the layers a little bit and show your audience more about how you work and what you do. It gives your audience a lot of clarity and understanding about what to expect when they hire you. Map out the steps of your process and decide which pieces of that process are different than others in your industry and highlight those.
3. The Passion Portrait. This is all about the feelings. What does it feel like to work with you? Your customers don’t just want a transaction. They want to work with you and build a connection. You want to demonstrate to your audience what it feels like to work with you. Are you fun, quirky, introverted, or a no-nonsense coach? Find ways that you can demonstrate that personality in your images because that will help your audience decide if they’re the right fit to work with you.
4. The Lifestyle Lens. This is all about showing your slice of life. Show off your hobbies and the activities that you do on the personal side. This can be a real connecting point for your audience. Sharing your interests and past times will build that relationship with your audience and humanize your brand. Knowing your audience and your ideal client and how they’re spending their time is really important here, because you want what you’re sharing to resonate with them. You’re trying to connect with the people that are your people.
5. The Future Forecast. Here’s your opportunity to share your big fantasies, your goals, and your dreams. Where do you want your business to be in 5 years? This will inspire your audience and help them see that they’re hiring someone who is a goal getter. You’re giving the audience a taste of what those dreams are. When you incorporate your dreams into these images, the dreams will happen faster because you’re actually putting them out into the world.
6. The Storytelling Stock. The stock photos that you have of your books, your marketing materials, your business cards, your office, etc. These are the inanimate objects that contribute to your story and can fill in the gaps. It gives a sneak peek into your life and adds just a little something to your brand. You can’t have your face every single time, so this is a way to rotate some different types of images that still connect to your brand and tell your story.
