Her Entrepreneur Journey

Meg got started as a web and graphic designer and did agency work for years before starting a family. She and her husband adopted 2 boys from Uganda, and had another little boy not long after, so their family grew pretty quickly. Because of that, she quit her job and stayed home to raise the kids.

After a couple of years, she started to do some freelance design work again, working mostly with women like herself who were trying to build up a side hustle or small business. She found that her clients had great services and she built them beautiful websites, but her clients weren’t getting traffic. She studied everything she could and ended up transitioning her services to SEO, because she loved making such a big impact for her clients and their business.

Assuming we know what SEO is, what parts of our website actually affect our SEO?

One of the myths we should bash right from the start is that there’s no need to understand SEO because it changes all the time. While algorithms do change, the fundamentals of good SEO don’t, so it’s important to keep that in mind. It should be a layer of your marketing, of your content, of your social strategy, and not just something you do and then forget about.

SEO should be part of every area of your business, because good business is good SEO.

One of the biggest things search engines care about is your overall authority and expertise in whatever you say you’re an expert in. That means that when Google reads your site they’re looking to make sure that you’re an expert in the things you say you do, so you should continuously highlight those specific things that you want to be known for and write blog posts, captions, etc. in regards to that. Have distinct categories for your content, use keywords within those categories, and write about those specific things.

Besides writing great content, what can we do to make people stay on our site?

It’s important that visitors on your website are clicking through multiple pages and are staying on your site for longer than 45 seconds. Good design is a huge proponent in making that happen. If your site looks appealing, loads fast, and is easy to read, people are more likely to click through and engage with your content.

Organization is a pretty big factor too. Make sure your site is easy to navigate and your not hiding menus. Ensure that your archive of content is available for readers and that it’s organized with a system instead of just by date (no one wants to click through posts from May 2015 just to find what they’re looking for!)

Can you explain how these terms affect SEO?

Alt Text/Tags: Google can’t see pictures - they read words, so alternative text is giving descriptions to your images. You need to tell Google what that image actually is. For example if you have a headshot on your site the alt text might read “Headshot of Meg Clarke from Clapping Dog Media.”

Headers: Search engines read your site like we would read a newspaper. It reads the headlines first, then goes back to read the paragraphs, so your header texts are the defining markers for what your site and that page is about.

Back-linking: A great way to show Google that you’re an expert is having other sites back-link to yours. This means that you’re guest posting, getting featured, or that people are sharing your content on their own platforms and linking to your site.
