What One Year of Podcasting Has Taught Me and How It Applies to Your Business
Females on Fire has been in the world for a whole year now! I'm so thankful to be able to provide this incredible show, and so to celebrate, I wanted to share the 5 most important lessons I've learned in my one year of podcasting. These are great tips if you've started or want to start a podcast, but they also apply directly to your business as well, so these are great tips for everyone!
1. It’s okay to learn as you go
Whether you’re starting a podcast, a new business, or even just picking up a hobby, you’re not going to be an expert right from the start. It’s so important to remember that you’re going to learn and lessons and grow from experiences as you continue trying at the thing you want to be successful at. You have to be open-minded to learning and growing, and know that you’re going to make mistakes, endure failures, and try alternate routes along the way. Nothing will ever be perfectly according to plan, and if you sit around waiting until you feel like you’re good enough, then you’ll never get started. Today is the best day to try something new and what you know right now is good enough to start learning.
2. Build a community, not an audience
The best way to grow an audience is to build a community instead. The best people to tell you what they want to hear are the people that you’re trying to get to listen. When you focus on the community-building aspect, you create a space for people to learn from you, but to also empower each other and connect with others. Those people tend to feel more connected to you and your brand/business/etc. and end up bringing other people into the community as well. People love to feel heard and accepted, and building a community where you can show you care and help them connect with each other is going to be much more powerful than just gaining followers to grow an audience.
3. Not every guest (or client) is a good fit
This applies to anything in your business. Podcast guests, new clients, collaborations with colleagues, etc. It is completely acceptable to tell someone “no.” It doesn’t mean that you can’t learn from them or that the knowledge that they have to share isn’t valuable, because it is, it just means that you know what you want/need to accomplish and they aren’t the best possible fit for moving the needle on that goal. You have to work with and collaborate with people who represent the mission and the values that you’re focused on. Not everyone will fit that purpose and that’s okay.
4. Plan, but don’t over-plan
It’s so important to have a plan and be organized, especially in business. BUT if you put all of your effort into mapping out the perfect plan, you’re not going to have any effort left to actually get things done, and you’re inevitably going to be disappointed the minute something doesn’t go the way you were anticipating. Being organized and productive can make or break a business, but it’s crucial to that productivity and your success that you don’t over-plan every single aspect of your life/business. Plus, some things just work out better when they’re spontaneous and flow naturally!
5. Be consistent
Consistency is the actual key to success. A lot of the time, we feel like we’re working so hard and staying consistent, but we’re really just being consistent on how much we binge on Netflix or scroll on Instagram. My question to you is are you being consistent in the things that actually matter? You have to put your focus on the things that are going to move the needle on your success and get you closer to where you want to be. Then you have to stay consistent on those things!
