How to Set Intentional Goals and Some Goal Setting Resources
Everyone sets resolutions for a new year, but it's so much more important to be setting goals in your business and your life. In this episode, we're talking about the difference between a resolution and a goal, how to set intentional goals that work, and giving you the strategy and the resources to set your goals.
The difference between a resolution and a goal
When a new year rolls around, everyone loves to set resolutions for what they want to accomplish that year. What you should be doing instead is setting goals. The difference? A resolution is simply saying āI want to lose 30 pounds this year.ā A goal has a plan attached to it. It has actions and responsibilities and deadlines that help you to achieve it. So instead of the previous statement, you would say āI want to lose 30 pounds this year, and hereās all the ways Iām going to make that happen.ā
How to actually set an intentional goal
Step 1: Write down the end goal you want to meet and put it somewhere that youāll see it everyday. In your planer, on your wall, or even a Post-It note on your computer, but make it visible.
Step 2: Now break it down. If itās January 1st and you want to meet the goal by the end of the year, how can you break it down into 12 smaller goals, one for each month? So if your end goal is to lose 30 pounds, your January goal could be to lose 2 pounds, then 3 pounds for February, and so on.
Step 3: Break it down even further. Take each of those 12 monthly goals and break them down into 4 additional goals to be used each week. Using the previous example, if your January goal is to lose 2 pounds, your goal for week 1 might be to not eat any junk food, week 2 might be to start working out twice a week, and so on.
Breaking your overall goal down into monthly, weekly, and possibly even daily steps is whatās going to help you actually plan it out and achieve it.
My fave goal setting resources
(None of these are ads - just the stuff I love that works! Click on any title to find / purchase it!)
Powersheets. If youāve ever checked out Lara Casey or Cultivate What Matters, then you know they are all about setting intentional goals, and Powersheets help yuo do just that. You sit down at the beginning of each month and they help you to define exactly what your goals are, your action plan to reach them, and your itinerary for the month.
The Start Today Journal. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I love Rachel Hollis. She created the Start Today Journal and it is eye-opening. You start by writing down all the dreams you want to accomplish, then pick 10 that you want to start with and that matter most to you. You write all 10 down every single day as if theyāve already happened, and then write down one goal that youāre working toward first thatās going to help you accomplish one of those 10 dreams. Itās amazing for your mindset!
Your own phone. My biggest mentors set reminders all throughout the day on their phoneās alarm clock for things like taking a moment of gratitude or soaking in a moment. You should be doing the same thing for your goals! Set reminders every day to help you remember what youāre working toward or to ask yourself if youāve completed your weekly or daily goal yet.
Ultimate Goal Setting Guide. Shameless plug: this one is mine! This has a small reading section in the front to help you learn about intentional goals, and then thereās a workbook in the back. Print it out or download it on your computer again and again for each goal. Itāll help you break your goal down into monthly and weekly action items and check them off as you go!
Books. What would a recommendation list be without a few books? āYour Best Year Everā by Michael Hyatt is an excellent book for setting intentional goals and learning how to achieve them. Brendon Burchardās āHigh Performance Habitsā is one of my personal favorites. While itās not exactly about goal setting, itās about learning to create habits in your life that will help you be more productive and successful, and if you want to reach a goal, creating new habits is the first step!
