Her Entrepreneur Journey
Shaunae knew she wanted to pursue photography from a young age. She graduated high school a year early and went to school for photography in Massachusetts, but ended up moving back home to Wisconsin to figure out what she actually wanted to do with photography once she graduated college. She took on a few odd jobs and ended up photographing a wedding with a friend.
She fell in love with wedding photography. She tried to get an internship or work for free within the community, but was told that there wasnāt room in the oversaturated market for another photographer. A little discouraged, she started her own business, and over the last 8 years sheās grown her business to the full-time career that it is today.
How have you seen growth in your business from blogging?
I started blogging years ago when I was still in school because it seemed like a great way to share your work. I was in yearbook and journalism in school, so I loved the writing aspect. It started with showing off my latest work, and then I started really using it to get attention back to me and my website, and treated it more like an educational resource than a portfolio. I started attracting clients who were using it as a free tool and then realizing I did photography and booked me because I had already given them that free advice and ideas.
My blog really made it look like I was in demand.
How do you actually come up with the content for your blog?
Always make sure that youāre planning your content ahead of time, because that makes it more intentional. Blogs should educate, inspire, motivate, and share your personal side. Think of topics that fall into one of those areas for your potential readers. Start with setting the expectations of what readers can expect to see on the blog in the future. Share the why behind your business and why you want to serve people in your business. Find things that are āno-brainersā to you that your audience may want to see like behind-the-scenes, your day-to-day process, etc. Write what you know.
What about the format and frequency of blogging?
Set a count of how many blogs you want to do per week or month, and then be consistent. The more blogging the better, but schedule what you know you can actually commit to and then stick with that. Blog on weekdays so that people are actually consuming your content. Also, write like you speak. You want readers to hear the post the way you would say it to them. Blogging doesnāt have to sound really professional, just make sure that everything is grammatically correct.
In the post itself, thereās a few things you want to look at. Make sure that your headers and titles are specific to what youāre blogging about, so that search engines will recognize that and bring it up in search results when your potential clients start looking. Use keywords that you know people are going to search for.
